The Story Behind This Photograph
It was a warm summer morning, and I was landing for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere, in this powerful corner of the planet.
I walked slowly along black volcanic sand,
as if I had the power to awaken a giant presence that, until that moment, had peacefully dominated the region:
Mount Taranaki.
At my side, the vast and roaring Pacific Ocean
was asking me, with both insistence and gentleness, to listen.
And in that alchemy of earth and water, I saw her:
daughter of the tides, born where the ocean meets the breath of the land.
I photographed her, and for a moment the whole world seemed to hold its breath with me.
